On October 5th, 2023 at about 4:37am, New Rochelle Police responded to a 4th Floor apartment at 361 Main Street on a report of a dispute. Upon arrival, Police were told a 43-year-old male suspect was inside the apartment with young child (2 YOA), and that he was “high on drugs” and in possession of a knife. Upon entry to the apartment, the officers encountered the suspect laying on the ground, holding the child and holding a knife; he also had blood on his face. While trying to de-escalate the situation, Officers saw the knife fall from the suspect’s hand as he grasped the child closer to him. Officers told him to give them the child, but he refused. When the officers moved toward the suspect, he tried to pick the knife up again. Officers then used Tasers and physical force to stop him from getting the knife and to free the child. The suspect continued to struggle further with the officers, but they were able to handcuff him and take him into custody. The child, who sustained a 2-inch laceration to the head, was transported to a hospital and was in stable condition. Two New Rochelle Police Officers were injured in the struggle, one sustaining a small laceration to the face and hand, and the other a laceration and bruise to his hand. Both Officers were treated and released from a local hospital; they are currently out on injured leave. It was found that the suspect had entered his ex-girlfriend’s apartment while high on drugs and the child he was holding was not his.
