[ARCHIVED] New Rochelle Selected as Major Hub for Volunteer NY!’s 9/11:Serve + Remember National Day of Service

Iona VNY

Volunteer New York! has announced that the City of New Rochelle will be a major hub for their 12th annual 9/11: Serve + Remember event (serveandremember.org) on Sunday, September 11. Online registration is now open for individuals, groups, and families.

Mayor Noam Bramson said, “Volunteers make invaluable contributions to the life and vitality of New Rochelle, while exemplifying the engaged and generous spirit of our community. We are proud to strengthen our ongoing partnership with Volunteer New York! and to serve as a hub of activities on this 9/11 National Day of Service and Remembrance.”

All 9/11 Day New Rochelle Volunteer Hub projects will take place Sunday, September 11 over two 90-minute shifts from 10 AM to 2 PM within Spellman Hall at Iona College, 715 North Ave. For ways to give back in New Rochelle as part of 9/11 Day or to search dozens of active volunteer opportunities throughout the city as part of the Volunteer New Rochelle program, visit volunteernewyork.org/newrochelle.

The region-wide day of service will take place on Saturday, September 10 and Sunday, September 11, with the projects on September 10 located on-site at various nonprofits throughout our region. In addition to the Hub at Iona University, local New Rochelle volunteers will have the opportunity to create a Born Learning Trail in Feeney Park and build a three-bin compost center in Lincoln Park.

“The more years that pass, the more imperative it is we work even harder to rekindle the spirit of unity and service that arose in the aftermath of the tragic attacks of September 11. It’s a day of tribute to those we lost, and the countless sacrifices made,” said Volunteer New York! Executive Director, Jeanette Gisbert. “This year we have made sure people of all ages and abilities will find meaningful ways to serve. What act of kindness will you do this 9/11 Day?”

Before registering, please review the project’s online opportunity description to find out if a project is family-friendly or has requirements, like wearing a mask. Advanced registration is required.

ABOUT NATIONAL 9/11 DAY OF SERVICE

9/11 Day was created in 2002 as a way to meaningfully honor the memories of those lost on September 11, 2001 and to inspire Americans and others to do good deeds in support of creating a better and more peaceful world. It’s also a day that is meant to help rekindle the extraordinary spirit of togetherness, volunteerism, and compassion that arose in the immediate aftermath of the 9/11 tragedy.

Since becoming a National Day of Service, 9/11 Day has grown incredibly into the United States’ largest day of charitable service. By volunteering on 9/11 Day each year, you help support their mission to transform the anniversary of September 11 into a worldwide day of good and a symbol of American resilience –

helping to keep the spirit of all who were lost alive in our hearts and minds, while also creating a positive legacy that can be passed down for generations upon generations to come. Learn more about the #911DAY movement at 911day.org
