[ARCHIVED] New Rochelle Police Department Launches Body-Worn Camera Program

The New Rochelle Police Department has begun roll-out of body-worn cameras (BWC’s) this month, with more than 80 officers now trained and equipped. Body-worn cameras will be deployed by all New Rochelle Police Officers, Detectives, and Supervisors who are assigned to street duty.

In addition to their valuable use for evidence, training, and crime scene investigation, the cameras will provide a greater level of transparency during officer and community interactions. Once activated by the officer, the BWC will record both audio and video. The data captured by the camera will then be catalogued, and stored according to established New York State retention timelines.

The City received grants from both New York State Assemblyman Steve Otis and Assemblywoman Amy Paulin’s offices to help defray some of the costs associated with the purchase of the video equipment. New Rochelle joins Yonkers, White Plains and Westchester County in the use of this technology.

In early 2022, the NRPD will enhance their existing police car dashboard camera program, by adding models that will work in conjunction with the body-worn cameras. Those models will sync with the BWC’s, and can record upon activation of the overhead lights.
