The City of New Rochelle continues to keep sustainability at the forefront of its redevelopment as the city’s free, on-demand electric shuttle service Circuit NR recently received the Clean Air NY Champions Award, an award sponsored by the New York State Department of Transportation. As a Clean Air NY Champion, Circuit NR and the City of New Rochelle were recognized for their efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and create more sustainable, livable cities. The award coincided with National Drive Electric Week, which raises awareness on the many benefits of electric vehicles and are a part of New Rochelle’s ambitious electric vehicle (EV) strategy to encourage environmentally friendly modes of transportation. That strategy includes the installation of EV charging stations conveniently located downtown, along with the city’s growing fleet of electric vehicles.
In the one-year Circuit NR has been providing the service in downtown New Rochelle, which is in the middle of a game-changing redevelopment with over 30 construction projects across 12 million square feet of prime downtown real estate, not a single drop of gasoline has been used and over 38,000 vehicle miles have been saved through its 30,000+ trips to date. In addition to reducing emissions, Circuit trips lead to less idling and additional convenience navigating downtown, including New Rochelle’s Metro North Station.
“Circuit and the City of New Rochelle continue to lead the way on climate action, and we are proud to recognize them as Clean Air NY Champions. Since the City implemented Circuit NR, more than 15 metric tons of CO2 emissions have been mitigated,” said Tom Conboy, a spokesperson for Clean Air NY.
"Circuit NR reflects New Rochelle's broader commitment to sustainable development and clean energy. We are delighted that this innovative service has been embraced by so many residents and visitors in our community, and we appreciate New York State's recognition of Circuit NR as a positive model," said New Rochelle Mayor Noam Bramson.
“As new developments rise above the New Rochelle skyline with the city’s train station at the heart of the city’s downtown transformation, the City is providing a catalyst for sustainable and responsible growth by making its downtown easily accessible to reduce our carbon footprint and reliance on single occupancy vehicles as we strive to create additional mobility for our residents. We are so thrilled that many residents are taking advantage of the service,” said New Rochelle Development Commissioner Luiz Aragon.
Prior to the pandemic, Circuit NR was moving over 4,000 riders per month, with its fleet of three electric vehicles. In the Spring, Circuit NR made some adjustments and kept operating as an essential service with rigorous safety procedures and cleaning protocols in place, including partitions between rows, to help shuttle essential and frontline workers. Circuit NR also worked with the City, 511NYRideshare and Montefiore New Rochelle Hospital to develop a shuttle service with an expanded coverage area to carry visiting healthcare workers between the hospital and their hotel before and after their shifts, highlighting the adaptability of the service.
“On behalf of Circuit NR, we are proud to accept this award here in New Rochelle. I especially want to thank our amazing team of drivers, manager, James Reffi, the support of the City and the strength of the community for making this possible. It’s been wonderful to see the community take to the service the way it has and the positive impact it’s having on the environment,” said Alex Esposito, Founder of Circuit.
