To celebrate National Public Works Week, the Department of Public Works hosted a Truck Day event for kindergartners at Barnard School on Thursday, May 23. Students had the opportunity to explore the department’s ‘big trucks’ and at the same time learn about the important role Public Works plays in our community.
“The men and women of the Department of Public Works provide essential services and are often unseen,” noted Commissioner Scott Pickup. "Thank you to Principal Cracco and his staff for making it possible to visit the children at Barnard to share a little bit about what we do."
The event featured five DPW vehicles: garbage truck, street sweeper, claw, bucket, and dump truck. DPW workers spoke to classes about their jobs and the equipment they use, and emphasized the safety messages of “Think Safety, Think Smart” and “Slow Down To Get Around”. Students embraced the opportunity to touch a truck and see the trucks in action.
“It Starts Here” is the 2019 theme of National Public Works Week, representing the year-round efforts of public works professionals nationally and locally in the City of New Rochelle.
