[ARCHIVED] New Rochelle Celebrates Arbor Day With Tree Planting

IMG_8867 (2)

The City of New Rochelle observed Arbor Day by planting a white oak tree in front of City Hall, joined by classes of students from the New Rochelle Children’s Center for Learning.

The event highlighted the City’s urban forestry initiative, part of the GreeNR sustainability plan which aims to increase the number of trees in New Rochelle through preservation, maintenance and an expanded tree planting program. This year the City will plant hundreds of trees, and is encouraging property owners to sign up for a street tree in their neighborhood.

There is no cost to property owners and a variety of trees are available for selection including linden, oak, and gingko. A video on the City’s website shows each species along with signup information.

“Trees add beauty to our neighborhoods, even as they improve our environment and property values,” said Mayor Noam Bramson.  “New Rochelle is committed to planting hundreds of new trees every year, and we encourage residents to sign up for their own free sapling.”
