The New Rochelle Police Department recently welcomed K-9 officer Jodie, a 1½ year old German shepherd, as the newest member of the Critical Incident Unit’s Team B. After a rigorous 17-week training, K-9 Jodie and his handler, Police Officer Gary Moss, graduated from the K9 Basic Patrol School in Yonkers, NY.

The department has maintained an active and highly trained K9 Unit since 1997.

“The Unit has been a tremendous asset to the Department significantly increasing its investigative capacity and ability to respond more effectively to a variety of emergencies,” said Police Commissioner Joseph Schaller.

The Critical Incident Unit (CIU) is comprised of three teams. Jodie and Police Officer Moss will be joining K9 Diesel and Police Officer Jose Pena in CIU Team C, and K9 Valor and Police Officer Matthew Glass in CIU Team A.

K9 Jodie came to the Department through the New Police Foundation as a donation from Gary Torigian and his Butterflies From Jodie Foundation.

“We are grateful to Mr. Torigian, his Butterflies From Jodie Foundation and the New Rochelle Police Foundation for their generous donation and continued support,” said Schaller.

In the spring K-9 Jodie and his partner will continue training with a three-month long Explosive Detection School where Jodie will develop the skills to detect various types of explosives.
