Trees fight climate change, benefit wildlife, help save energy and provide much-needed cooling through shade and evaporation. They absorb carbon dioxide and release oxygen- in fact, one large tree can supply a day’s supply of oxygen for four people. Plus they beautify our neighborhoods and are a valuable part of stormwater control.

This season, it’s time to “Fall for a tree” and plant a street tree in your neighborhood! The City’s urban forestry initiative- part of New Rochelle’s GreeNR sustainability plan- aims to increase the number of trees in New Rochelle through preservation, maintenance and an expanded tree planting program. There is no cost to property owners and a variety of trees are available for selection including linden, oak, and gingko. A video on the City’s website shows each species along with signup information.

“Every homeowner in New Rochelle can contribute to the beauty and environmental health of our community by planting a tree,” said Mayor Noam Bramson. “The City’s program makes it easy, fun . . . and free!”

And for those residents who want to make a big difference by starting small, the City will be giving away Colorado Blue Spruce seedling trees at the New Rochelle Street Fair on Sunday, September 9.
