[ARCHIVED] Reminder: DACA/Work Permit Renewal Deadline Oct 5, 2017

On September 5, 2017, the United States Citizenship and Immigration Services announced that requests for DACA (Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals) consideration would no longer be accepted. However, current beneficiaries whose benefits will expire on or by March 5, 2018 may renew their DACA/work permits for two years. The deadline to apply is October 5, 2017.

In light of the pending deadline, the City of New Rochelle and City School District of New Rochelle are circulating an informational flyer noting two community resources available to applicants in need of further assistance: The United Community Center of Westchester in New Rochelle at 360 North Avenue, and the Westchester Hispanic Coalition in White Plains. Additionally, the Westchester Hispanic Coalition can assist with application fee waivers for income-qualified applicants, as well as legal assistance.

"Especially at a time of heightened concern and sensitivity surrounding immigration issues, I am proud to stand in support of New Rochelle's Dreamers, and will continue working with School colleagues to share important information about the rights and opportunities available to our residents,” said New Rochelle Mayor Noam Bramson.

“We are grateful for our partnership with the City in this initiative,” said New Rochelle Schools Superintendent Dr. Brian Osborne. “We want to do whatever we can to ensure that everyone in our community knows their rights and that they are supported in the need to meet any deadlines to maintain their status.”

New Rochelle City Council Member Louis Trangucci said, “I appreciative that we can join forces to provide needed information and resources that will give the best assistance to our residents.”

Residents who do not currently have DACA or a pending DACA application cannot apply, as the program has been terminated. DACA applications received on or before September 5, 2017, will continue to be processed; and DACA/work permits that expire after March 5, 2018 are not eligible for an extension.
