May is Bike Month, and on Friday May 19th for National Bike to Work Day the City hosted a pop-up “Walk/Bike to Work” expo at the corner of North and Huguenot. The event, featured bike demos, health and safety tips, ride sharing information and more and was sponsored by Montefiore New Rochelle, 511NYRideshare, Danny’s Cycle, Pedro Sanchez Cycling, the New Rochelle Chamber of Commerce, Westchester County Department of Transportation, New Rochelle Bike Share and The Only Mart,
Council Member Barry Fertel, who regularly bikes from home to his office in downtown New Rochelle, said, “With Walk to Work and Bike to Work initiatives, we focus on the value of healthy, sustainable transportation options.”
Walk/Bike to Work supports New Rochelle’s Complete Streets Program, which seeks to improve roadways for all users: pedestrians, cyclists, transit riders and motor vehicles. Recognizing that roadways often designed with a primary emphasis on vehicles Complete Streets offers safer and more inviting means of access to the places we live, work, and grow for everyone. The City’s consultants, AKRF and Nelson/Nygaard presented their initial report on Complete Streets to the City Council on May 16.
