Step University - Elite Steppers

Step University - Elite Steppers

STEP University is a grant-based program funded by the Westchester County Youth Bureau. The Youth Bureau’s STEP University “ELITE Steppers” aims to create an atmosphere of unity and diversification through stepping and group creativity. Youth that participates in STEP University can expect to see improvement in the following areas:

  • 1. Teamwork Development. Working with others is essential in all areas of life. Working with teammates from different backgrounds and skill levels in Stepping helps our youth to see themselves as part of a team, not just as individuals, which helps them strive for success as a team.
  • 2. Increased Skills Acquisition. When you are part of Stepping-steps, movements and methods are at a faster pace. With the practice and dedication needed, you can watch our youth dramatically increase their abilities in a shorter time.
  • 3. Valuable Life Lessons. Competitions for step teach valuable life lessons. You can expect your child to learn about teamwork, resolving differences, how to be a polite winner or loser, professional networking, and much more all within the sport of Stepping.
  • 4. Creative Expression. Expressing yourself is something that many people struggle with. When Youth are involved with Stepping, they can enjoy a creative and active outlet. In addition to the above; the youth will be connected to adults who, in addition to the role of coach, will serve as mentors for them. These coaches/mentors are crucial partners in supporting the mental health and well-being of our youth. Their connection to the youth will help protect against the negative outcomes listed above. The Program Coordinator and the coaches have many years of experience in Stepping and will be able to train the youth and inspire them.

Up to 50 elementary school students will participate in STEP University. There will be a Program Coordinator, Two Assistant Program Coordinators, and Program Specialists (3 max). Students will attend practice 3x per week. This will allow them to build their skills and prepare for competitions and showcases. High School Steppers will serve as mentors for the elementary school youth and assist them with the step dancing routines.

We are actively looking for new members to join. If interested, don't hesitate to get in touch with the Youth Bureau.
