Under the direction of the Bureau Manager,
the Bureau of Sanitation is responsible for collection
of garbage, ashes, trash and other refuse from private
residences, from commercial establishments on a restricted
basis, from City litter cans and baskets located in
business areas, and from apartment buildings. Staff
and equipment from this Bureau are used to plow streets
during snowfall.
Over 36,000 tons of garbage is
collected each year and over 20,000 tons of material
is recycled each year.

TV and COMPUTER MONITORS
TV and computer monitors should not be put out
for collection with regular household trash. The
Department of Public Works collects computer monitors
and TV sets, by appointment only,
on the second and third Saturday of each month. Residents should
contact the Department of Public Works at 914-235-4654
by 3:00 on the Thursday before the pickup to ensure
a place on the list for collection.
Disposal of Hazardous and Radiological
wastes
Radiological Medical Residuals
If you
or your pets are undergoing medical treatment utilizing
radiological materials, the residual materials (dressings,
etc.) should be returned to the hospital or health
care facility for proper disposal.
Hazardous Materials
It is illegal to
dispose of hazardous materials with garbage, trash
or recycling. While bad for the environment this
also poses a threat to the safety of Public Works
staff. Violators will be reported are subject to
prosecution. Westchester County offers a series of
