The purpose of this board is to prepare reports and recommendations on the designation of historic districts and sites; issue or deny certificates of appropriateness for landmarks and buildings in historic districts which require a building, demolition or sign permit; and maintain and periodically revise the listings of historical sites, buildings and districts and data about them, including their classification with respect to national, state or local significance.

The purpose of this board is to review applications for sign permits to determine if a variance should be granted from sign regulations. The Commissioner of Development is the chairperson of the Sign Review Board. The board meets monthly. The commissioner's secretary is Secretary to the Board, who prepares the agenda, schedules meetings and takes minutes.
