1. I know that the City owns some of the property in front of my home between the curb and my house. How much does it own?

In general, the City owns approximately 10 feet beyond the curb line. In some cases its more and in others it’s less. However, only a detailed property survey showing the curb and the property line truly shows that distance. As a guide, utility poles, fire hydrants, street signs, and lights are all located within the City right of way.

2. I’m doing some work on the curb and sidewalk in front of my home - do I need a permit from Public Works?

Yes. The Department administers the permit process for this. Please follow the Department's standard details.

3. Whose responsibility is it to repair the curb and sidewalk in front of my home?

In addition to the responsibility to remove ice and snow from the sidewalks abutting your property, the City Charter also requires property owners to maintain their curb and sidewalks in a state of good repair.
