The work in this exhibit is from Ms. Cowan’s NY Muse project and is comprised of four mediums: Painting, sculpture, literature and sound. The work is narrative, the paintings life-sized, and representational, though unconstrained by realism. The work is bold, colorful and painterly, with graphic elements. The subject matter is a combining of ancient Greek mythology with modern/ colloquial culture creating work for which the artist has coined the term Popteric. The installation of the work is site-specific manner. Like the paintings, the text is bold and large, each letter measuring about two to six inches. The finished result as akin to a sort of large-scale graphic novel complete with soundtrack. The accompanying audio is ephemeral - a looped recording plays throughout the exhibit - and is a combination Ms. Cowan’s stories spoken aloud and the sounds that influenced the work, moving from the baroque to the New York punk scene to Greek pop music.
